Franz Josef Glacier Guides have just launched a new experience in time for summer – Glacier Encounter. We asked one of our manuhiri to tell what they thought of this brand-new way to explore the Franz Josef Glacier!
My Glacier Encounter Experience with Franz Josef Glacier Guides
If you’re after an experience that’s equal parts adventure and connection, the Glacier Encounter with Franz Josef Glacier Guides is a must-do. This new offering gives you the chance to fly over the stunning glacier, land on it, and explore alongside one of their expert guides. Here’s what my experience looked like.
Getting Started
The day kicked off at the Franz Josef Glacier Guides base, where the team welcomed us with their usual friendly energy. After check-in, I got a wristband, went through a quick health and safety briefing, for both the on-ice experience and the helicopter flight. The process was smooth, and the team kept it light and fun while making sure everything was done right.
Exploring the Tiaki Trail
Before our flight, we took a short walk along the Tiaki Trail. This easy trail winds through the lush West Coast rainforest and is a great reminder of why caring for New Zealand’s stunning natural environment is so important.
Our guide shared stories about the ngahere (forest) and explained the values of Tiaki, which encourage us to care for people, places, and the planet. It was a chance to pause, connect with the environment, and learn a bit more about the incredible area we were about to explore.
The Helicopter Flight
Soon, our helicopter arrived, and our pilot Andy got us all settled in. Before we knew it, we were up in the air, flying over the glacier and surrounding peaks. Seeing Franz Josef Glacier from above was incredible — a huge expanse of ice weaving through the mountains.
Andy pointed out some key spots, including Alma Hut, which sits tucked away at the top of the glacier. Knowing there’s a backcountry hut in such a remote and rugged spot really puts into perspective how unique this place is.
Landing on the Ice
When the helicopter touched down, we were greeted by Jule, our guide on the glacier. Stepping onto the ice was surreal. It felt like being in a completely different world.
Jule showed us around, pointing out how the guiding team was carving steps and pathways for the heli-hikers arriving later. These guides clearly know their stuff and watching them work was a highlight of the day.
The views were amazing from up there. Standing on a glacier thousands of years in the making, looking out over native rainforests and the Tasman Sea was slightly surreal. The scale pf everything really puts things into perspective!
We also got to hear the story of Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere, the Māori legend tied to the glacier’s name. Jule shared it in a way that really connected us to the place and its significance, adding depth to the whole experience.
Why It Stands Out
What makes the Glacier Encounter different is the chance to actually spend time on the glacier. You’re not just flying over it; you’re standing on it, taking it all in, and learning from guides who genuinely love what they do.
The Franz Josef team brings a mix of expertise and fun that makes the experience feel both relaxed and special. They treat everyone like whānau and that’s what makes this adventure more than just another tour.
My Takeaway
The Glacier Encounter isn’t just about seeing a glacier; it’s about really experiencing it. From the helicopter ride to the time spent on the ice, the day was unforgettable in the best way. It's the perfect way to experience the Franz Josef Glacier if you're short on time while on the West Coast, or if you're not up for a half day Heli Hike experience.
If you’re keen to try it for yourself, check out the details and book your spot here. The team will make sure it’s a day to remember!
